Things to do in Austin
The Texas state capital is a boomtown of culture and creativity. Austin is a hub for music, comedy, and filmmaking, as well as a favorite foodie destination. For the past four years, Austin has been the fastest-growing city in the U.S. and the tech boom continues to turn the city into Texas’s answer to Silicon Valley. But despite all of its recent changes, Austin is still an extraordinarily open and welcoming place—a city where you’re not only allowed but expected to be yourself, in all your quirky glory.
Whether you come for business or pleasure, you can use your Audi rental car to explore the many options for outdoor activity. Hike and bike trails wind along Lady Bird Lake, where you can also catch the nightly departure of millions of bats during the spring and summer. There are also plenty of restaurants to dine al fresco, whether you’re in the mood for Tex-Mex, sushi, a steakhouse, or vegetarian fare.
Austin is also home to the flagship University of Texas at Austin. A public research university, the campus boasts the LBJ presidential library, Blanton Museum of Art, and the Harry Ransom Center where you can see the first photograph ever made and one of the few complete copies of the Gutenberg Bible.
If you’re not in town to cheer for the Texas Longhorns, you may want to see some real longhorns. Booking a rental car makes it convenient to drive to the Hill Country through wide-open vistas peppered by heads of cattle. Use the free GPS to plan a trip to Fredericksburg, about 90 minutes west of Austin. If you’re visiting during peach season, there will be plenty of road-side stands, or plot a wine-tasting tour. The Texas Hill Country is second only to the Napa Valley as a wine destination. Other premium features, like free Wi-Fi and SiriusXM Satellite Radio, will make your trip even more enjoyable.
As the city has grown, more toll roads have been built, which can make it easier to get to and from the airport. Fair toll tracking means you don’t have to worry about excess fees when charting your course.
